Moodle Quiz & Safe Exam Browser

Creation date: 05/05/2023 11:26    Updated: 12/08/2024 10:42
Safe Exam Browser (SEB) temporarily prevents the ability for students to copy or paste information from other sources, and prevents access to other programs, websites, system functions, and unauthorised resources on their device.

While the SEB can be used with a Moodle Quiz for face to face (in-class) invigilation, it is not recommended for remote use.

If an assessment is to be run remotely, then we recommend using the eAssessment Platform.

SEB is easily added to a Moodle Quiz. General settings are shown in the screenshot below:

Students should download and install the SEB software at least one week prior to the day of the assessment.

A Practice Quiz with SEB should be added to the Moodle site. Students should complete the Practice Quiz with SEB one (1) week prior to the assessment. A restriction should be applied to the assessment so that only students that have completed the Practice Quiz with SEB can access the actual assessment. This is important to minimise any technical difficulties at the time of the assessment.

Below are general instructions for students on day of assessment.

1. Close all applications on computer and ensure you are only logged into one account on your device (you can check for all logged in accounts under the 'Users' tab in Task Manager)

2. Open a Google Chrome Incognito window

3. Log into Monash Moodle - Students will need to type in their password and use multi-factor authentication

4. Navigate to the Moodle unit site and the assessment quiz

5. Click the Launch Safe Exam Browser button (ignore the other 3 buttons)

6. Students then need to enter their login details and use multi-factor authentication again => This locks down functionality on their computer so they only have access to the Quiz.

7. Click the Attempt Quiz button

8. When all questions have been attempted, click the Submit all and finish button

9. A confirmation message box will then be displayed => click, Submit all and finish button

10. On the bottom right hand corner of the screen, a Power on/off icon button will be displayed. Students need to click this Power on/off icon button

11. A message box will appear... Do you want to quit SEB? => Click the YES button

12. SEB will close and the incognito browser window will appear.

Information for students:

SEB is used on the eAssessment platform, so there are a number of student guides available with regards to installation etc...

eExam rules and phones:

5. Your phone must be on ‘do not disturb’ mode
Your phone must be switched to 'do not disturb' mode and placed face down on your desk. You must only use your phone to log in to your eExam with multi-factor authentication and, at the end of your exam, to upload photographs of any required handwritten responses – don’t access your phone until the instructions appear on your screen.

If you access your phone without permission during your exam, the online supervisor will flag your recorded session and a report will be provided to your faculty.

You can use your phone to contact Exam Support if you encounter technical difficulties during your exam. If you’re still connected with your online supervisor, advise them that you need to use your phone to contact IT Support.
