HPEO Information

Information about Health Professional Education Online (HPEO)

What is HPEO?

HPEO stands for Health Professional Education Online. It is a Moodle platform that is used for content created by Monash staff in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (alone or in partnership with external organisations), which is primarily designed to be accessed by health professionals who are not Monash staff or students, either for free, or for a fee.

Who can request an HPEO site?

Any staff member who works in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences can request an HPEO site. (See below for note about costs).

What type of content is already in HPEO?

HPEO is used by various staff within Monash to share their content and training packages with external audiences.

What is possible in HPEO?

HPEO is a Moodle platform, so most things that can be done in the standard version of the University’s Moodle system can be replicated in HPEO. As HPEO is a separate version of Moodle, it can be customised with different look and feel to enterprise Moodle.

Note that external audiences are not covered by most of the university’s copyright exemptions and licences, so carefully evaluate content to be included. The University’s copyright officer can be consulted via university-copyright@monash.edu.

The University’s instance of Turnitin cannot be used in HPEO, as the licence is specifically for use in accredited coursework programs.

What are the costs?

While we appreciate that many training resources developed are designed to be released on a not-for-profit basis, with emphasis on improving the quality of healthcare and/or healthcare education, our very small team need time to create the sites. To this end, there are basic costs for sites:

Set-up a new site, and enrol participants: $300 (one-off charge)

Site development, including instructional design and creating content from provided resources: $90 per hour*

*Content development can include converting content into SCORM packages, quizzes, formatted pages, interactive (H5P) resources and other options.

* A timing estimate will be provided when the site arrangements are agreed. You will only be charged for time used, and if additional time is required, this will be agreed with you prior to additional work being carried out.

Where an HPEO site is required with strong links to supporting Monash students (e.g. to host training for clinical supervisors who are not registered Monash staff), the fee may be waived.

Are there courses for which I should NOT use HPEO?

HPEO is designed for small-scale and relatively low-stakes courses where flexibility, customisabilty and ease of access are important. But, we do not have huge infrastructure behind it, so HPEO not suitable for high-stakes, high-budget projects where stability and very rapid response to requests are critical. The platform is generally very stable, and we maintain it carefully, but outages can and do sometimes occur (usually where HPEO liaises with another external system).

We do our best to ensure HPEO users get a smooth and stable experience, but we don't have the resources to support the platform out-of-hours. This makes HPEO unsuitable for large-budget projects with stringent KPIs. If you aren't sure whether HPEO is the right platform for you, please contact med-elearning@monash.edu and we can discuss your requirements.

How do I find out more or request a site?
