Following the universities soft launch of Panopto, we have been made aware of some issues which may impact how you use this technology, and your students overall experience.
Before continuing to utilise Panopto, please review these issues and consider alternative video solutions if necessary. eLearning Services are currently investigating alternative Video solutions
In an ideal world, Panopto folders provisioned through the Moodle block will be restricted to the three groups created for the Moodle unit with their respective permissions. Those three groups are:
Creators - Staff
Publishers - Staff
Viewers - Students and Guests
In semester 1, eSolutions identified numerous major issues which prevented this and, as a workaround, hade to change the settings to allow anyone with the link to be able to view the videos in Moodle.
This workaround allows your students to view all videos you upload to your Moodle page. To ensure students can continue accessing your videos we recommend you do not change this folder setting.
Note - Your video will not come up in search results. This setting also allows other users at Monash University to access the video, only if they have access to the video via a link.
Sharing Permissions can still be updated individually per video if required.
Over the past 18-months the Faculty’s eLearning team have been seeking clarification from the universities Education Innovation team as to how Panopto will handle rollovers.
We have proposed that when we roll over your Moodle sites, a new Panopto folder would be rolled over and your videos copied across. At this point in time, this is not the case.
Students accessing your Moodle site will be able to access any videos uploaded during the previous semester. This is due to the sharing settings messaged in the issue above.
Side effects of this include:
We believe this is not a long-term solution and will continue to seek an improved rollover process.
The introduction of Panopto brought with it the possibility of managing Video Assignments easily within Moodle.
Unfortunately, the process of submitting a video Assignment is not as obvious as it should be.

The main issue students are reporting is surrounding, item #3 in the Student Guide.
Instead of selecting the [assignments] folder, they are uploading the Assignment to their ‘My Folder’ which is the default option. When videos are uploaded to ‘My Folder’ only that user can access the video unless they choose to share this. This can become tricky when there are multiple markers of the Assignment.
Solution
Students need to be very careful in selecting the [assignments] folder otherwise their video may not be accessible by their marker.
